How To File Your Florida Homestead Exemption

One of the many benefits to owning a home in Florida is the Florida Homestead Tax Exemption! Here is a brief rundown of who is eligible, what exactly does the exemption mean and how to file for the exemption.


Who is eligible?

All legal Florida residents who own and claim a home, condo, co-op apartment, and certain mobile home lots as their primary residence. To qualify, you must own and occupy the home on January 1st of the year in which you want to claim the exemption. *Your exemption automatically renews and stays on the property for as long as you make it your primary residence.


What exactly does the exemption mean to you?

The exemption deducts up to $50,000 off the assessed value of the property you claim as your primary residence. In addition, it also caps future annual increases for your property to 3% or less.


How to file:

The deadline to file is March 1st. Here are the websites to file online through county property appraiser's websites as well as in person:


  • Duval County
